Composite Fillings—Safe, Healthy, and Beautiful

Dental fillings are a timeless and reliable solution for cavities caused by tooth decay, serving as your primary defense against further damage. These treatments fill the gap in your tooth, restoring its smooth texture and healthy appearance, effectively stopping the progression of decay and protecting your natural teeth

Our Mississauga dentists place only tooth-coloured composite resin fillings. Composite fillings are made from a material which is a blend of glass particles and polymer. This metal-free combination makes the fillings blend in perfectly with the surrounding tooth enamel. Additionally, composite fillings form a strong chemical bond with the tooth, and this means that less drilling is needed to securely place the filling.

Why Get a Filling?

If you’re like many people, the thought of getting a dental filling might make you feel anxious. However, it’s important to remember that dental fillings are a common and effective way to stop the advancement of tooth decay, even if you haven’t experienced pain or sensitivity yet. By promptly addressing cavities with fillings, you can prevent further damage and avoid more extensive and costly dental procedures in the future.

Despite any hesitations you may have, getting a filling when recommended is the wise thing to do for the following reasons:
  • Filling a cavity now prevents it from becoming painful, if it doesn’t already hurt.
  • Treating decay with a filling now can help you avoid the need for more comprehensive treatment later, such as dental crowns or root canal treatment.
  • Filling a cavity can help prevent painful and dangerous infections like dental abscesses.
  • Stopping decay in one tooth prevents it from spreading to other teeth.
  • Getting a filling can help extend the lifespan of your natural tooth.

How We Place Tooth-Coloured Dental Fillings

Receiving a composite filling is a safe and reliable dental treatment that can help restore your confident smile. Let us explain how we can assist you in addressing a decayed tooth and placing your filling:

Gentle Freezing

The first step in getting a dental filling is to numb the tooth and surrounding area. We will carefully administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort, and we won’t begin any work until you are completely numb. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, you should not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Placing Your Filling

Next, the dentist will prepare your tooth for the filling by removing any diseased or damaged tissue. This step ensures a smooth, healthy surface free of infection. Then, a bonding agent will be applied to the tooth, and the composite resin material will be matched to the natural colour of your tooth and carefully placed into the prepared area by the dentist. The composite material will be shaped and polished to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Curing Your New Filling

In the final stage of the filling procedure, the dentist will carefully shape the composite material to match the contours of your tooth. Then, a specialized LED light will be used to cure and harden the bond. The dentist will also polish the filling and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit and natural sensation when you bite down. By the end of the process, your filling will blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, restoring both the function and appearance of your tooth.

The Cost of a Composite Filling in Mississauga

Dental fillings are considered essential for good oral health, and are often covered generously by dental insurance plans. Depending on your plan, you may not have to pay anything at all for your filling, or you may be responsible for a portion of the treatment expense, typically up to $100. Without insurance, the cost of composite fillings in Mississauga can range from approximately $120 to $300 or more, depending on the size and location of the filling.

The cost of your dental filling treatment depends on multiple factors like:
  • The number of fillings you need
  • Which tooth or teeth need to be filled
  • How large the filling is
  • What kind of diagnostic imaging you need to detect cavities and plan the restoration
  • Whether you need any adjunctive services or treatments in addition to the fillings

Getting a dental filling is an important step in maintaining healthy and pain-free teeth, and we strive to make the treatment process as accessible and comfortable as possible for our patients. If you suspect that you have a tooth in need of treatment, we are here to help. Our team is dedicated to providing high-quality dental care and ensuring that our patients receive the individualized attention and treatment they need to achieve optimal oral health.

Before our dentists can  place a dental filling, they will need to conduct a comprehensive examination of your mouth. During your initial visit to our practice, we will perform a thorough dental exam and oral cancer screening to assess the condition of your teeth and gums. Your Mississauga dentist will then review the findings of the evaluation with you and discuss whether treatment such as a composite filling can help you achieve your dental health goals. We believe in providing our patients with all the information they need to make informed decisions about their dental care.

Frequently Asked Questions

The durability of a composite filling is subject to various factors, including the filling’s size and placement, your oral hygiene routines, and habits like teeth clenching or grinding. On average, composite fillings typically endure between 5 to 15 years or even longer when cared for appropriately. To enhance the lifespan of your composite filling, it’s crucial to uphold excellent oral hygiene practices, including twice-daily brushing, regular flossing, and scheduling routine dental examinations. Furthermore, avoiding behaviours like biting on hard objects or using your teeth as tools can contribute to safeguarding your filling from damage.

While the Canadian Dental Association has determined that silver-coloured fillings are safe for addressing tooth decay, it’s important to note that we do not use silver fillings in our dental practice located in Mississauga.

Although you can utilize over-the-counter products for a temporary fix to address a cavity or damaged tooth, we highly advise promptly seeking professional dental treatment for more dependable and lasting care. A decayed tooth might harbour harmful bacteria that necessitate proper treatment before the permanent sealing with a filling, a procedure best conducted by a trained dentist. If you find yourself in a situation where you must use a temporary over-the-counter DIY filling, it’s crucial to opt for a product explicitly designed for dental use and refrain from utilizing any other adhesive materials you might have at home.

If you’re experiencing a toothache caused by a cavity, there are a few steps you can take to relieve the pain and protect your tooth until you can see a dental professional:

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria.
Use over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to alleviate pain and discomfort.
Apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
Avoid eating or drinking anything that is too hot, cold, or sugary, as this can further aggravate the cavity and cause more pain.
Use an over-the-counter temporary filling material to cover the cavity and protect the tooth until you can see a dentist.
It’s important to remember that while these steps may provide temporary relief, they are not a substitute for professional dental treatment. If you have a cavity or are experiencing tooth pain, it’s best to schedule an appointment with a dental professional as soon as possible to prevent further damage and receive proper care.

I’ve been visiting Tomken since moving to Mississauga 2 years ago and I was impressed by their staff’s friendliness and welcoming attitude! I did my cleaning, cavity fixture and wisdom teeth removal and all went great. However I did have 2 cavity fixes within a year on the same teeth which I thought was a bit weird but they fixed and explained it to me. It always makes me feel at home during the appointment and the receptionists are very nice and helpful too. I would give them a six star just for letting the customers feel welcoming/ warm.
