Overview

What are family & children's dental services?

Family dentistry means one trusted team manages your oral health at every stage of life, from a toddler’s first visit to a senior’s ongoing maintenance. Rather than juggling separate providers, your family builds a relationship with a single practice that knows your history, tracks changes over time, and tailors care to each person’s needs. At Tomken Dental, we welcome patients of all ages under one roof. The Canadian Dental Association recommends scheduling a child’s first dental visit by age one or the eruption of their first tooth, and we make those early experiences as positive and stress-free as possible. That foundation shapes how your child feels about dental care for the rest of their life.

Continuity of Care

When the same practice sees your entire family year after year, we understand your medical history, allergies, and patterns. That context leads to better treatment decisions and more consistent preventive planning for everyone.

Preventive Focus

Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants form the foundation of healthy smiles. The CDC reports that sealants reduce cavity risk in molars by up to 80%, preventive care we recommend for children as soon as their permanent molars arrive.

Convenience for Busy Families

Scheduling multiple family members on the same day reduces time off work and school. With evening and Saturday appointments available, we work around your schedule, not the other way around.
Who This Is For

Dental care for every age and stage.

Whether your child just got their first tooth or your parent needs support managing aging dental concerns, our team is equipped to help. Family dentistry isn’t about a single age group, it’s about care that grows with you.

Infants & Young Children

We recommend a child’s first visit by age one. Early appointments familiarize children with the dental environment, allow us to monitor development, and give parents guidance on brushing, diet, and habits like thumb-sucking that affect oral health.

School-Age Children & Teens

Growing smiles need monitoring. We track eruption patterns, identify spacing concerns early, apply sealants and fluoride, and, when the time is right, can discuss orthodontic options including Invisalign for teens.

Adults

Adult care goes beyond cleanings. We address stress-related grinding, gum health, restorative needs, and cosmetic concerns, always within the context of your full health history and evolving dental goals.

Seniors

Aging changes your oral health. Dry mouth, medication effects, gum recession, and tooth wear require tailored attention. We offer restorative solutions, periodontal maintenance, and oral cancer screening to support comfort and function at every stage.
What To Expect

A typical family dental visit, step by step.

1

Warm Welcome & Health Review

Every visit starts with a review of your health history and any changes since your last appointment. For children, we take the time to introduce the environment gently, showing instruments, explaining what we’re doing, and building familiarity at their pace.

2

Cleaning & Examination

Our dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar build-up that brushing can’t reach, then polishes teeth. Your dentist follows with a thorough exam, checking for cavities, gum health, bite concerns, and any signs that warrant further attention.

3

Digital X-Rays (As Needed)

Digital X-rays help us see between teeth and beneath the gumline. We take them on a schedule appropriate for each patient’s age and risk level, not as a routine at every visit. Radiation exposure is significantly lower than traditional film.

4

Preventive Treatments

Children may receive fluoride varnish or sealants during their visit. Adults receive personalized guidance on hygiene and any areas needing extra attention. We share what we find and explain it in clear, practical terms.

5

Care Plan & Next Steps

If any treatment is needed, we explain the options, timing, and costs before you commit to anything. We’ll schedule your next recall appointment before you leave, and tailor the interval to your individual oral health needs.

What You Gain

Things to Know

Preparation & Aftercare

Before, during, and after your family visit.

Preparing Your Child

Keep the conversation about dental visits positive and matter-of-fact. Avoid words like “hurt” or “needle”, we use our own child-friendly language in the clinic. Bring a favourite comfort item if it helps. Scheduling in the morning often works best for young children before fatigue sets in. Let us know in advance if your child has anxiety so we can prepare accordingly.

During the Visit

Our team is experienced with patients of all ages and temperaments. For nervous children, we use a “show, tell, do” approach, explaining and demonstrating before we begin. Parents are welcome to stay with young children throughout. If a child isn’t ready for a full cleaning on the first visit, that’s fine, building a positive association matters more than completing every procedure on day one.

After the Visit

Reinforce good habits at home by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once daily. For children who received fluoride varnish, avoid hard or sticky foods for a few hours and don’t rinse the mouth immediately after the appointment. We’ll send you home with personalized guidance relevant to your child’s age and any specific findings from the visit.
Aftercare At Home

Building healthy habits between visits.

Good home care between appointments is what makes professional care truly effective. These habits support the work we do together.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, children under 3 use a rice-grain amount
Floss once daily; for young children, use floss picks until they can manage independently
Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals
Replace toothbrushes every three months or after illness
Wear a mouthguard during contact sports, we can fit one at your next appointment
Keep all scheduled recall appointments, prevention is always less costly than treatment

Common Questions

Family & children's dentistry FAQ.

When should my child first see a dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits are brief and gentle, focused on familiarizing your child with the environment and giving you guidance on home care.
Most patients benefit from two visits per year, but the CDA recommends individualized schedules based on each person’s oral health risk. Those managing gum disease, wearing braces, or with other concerns may need more frequent appointments. We’ll recommend an interval that fits your specific situation.
Not at all. Our team is experienced with children of all ages and temperaments, from infants through teens. Having one practice for the whole family means fewer appointments, more familiarity, and a dental team that already understands your family’s history.
Dental anxiety in children is very common and something we’re experienced with. We use a gentle, unhurried approach, explaining everything before we do it and never proceeding faster than a child is comfortable. Nitrous oxide sedation is available for children who need extra help relaxing.
