Crowns & Bridges in Mississauga

Restore a damaged tooth or fill the gap left by a missing one. Crowns and bridges are durable, natural-looking solutions that bring back full function and a seamless smile.
Overview

What are crowns and bridges?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. A dental bridge uses crowns on the teeth adjacent to a gap to support a false tooth (pontic) in the space left by a missing tooth, literally bridging the gap. Both are fixed restorations, they’re cemented in place and function like natural teeth. At Tomken Dental, crowns and bridges are crafted to match the colour and contour of your surrounding teeth, making the restoration virtually indistinguishable from what’s natural.

Protect & Strengthen

A crown protects a tooth that has been significantly weakened by decay, a large filling, a crack, or root canal therapy. Without a crown, the remaining tooth structure is vulnerable to fracture, often resulting in extraction. A crown seals and supports the tooth for years.

Restore Function

A crown or bridge brings back full chewing function. Missing or severely damaged teeth affect how you eat, speak, and distribute bite forces across your jaw. Restoring the tooth prevents the compensatory wear that develops when adjacent teeth take on extra load.

Preserve Your Smile

Gaps left by missing teeth cause adjacent and opposing teeth to shift over time, altering your bite and facial appearance. A bridge prevents this movement, maintaining proper alignment and the natural look of your smile.
Who This Is For

When a crown or bridge may be recommended.

Crowns and bridges address a range of situations, from protecting a compromised tooth to replacing one that’s been lost. The right solution depends on the condition of your remaining teeth, your bite, and your long-term goals.

After Root Canal Therapy

A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment is more brittle and prone to fracture. A crown placed over it seals the access point and provides structural support, greatly improving the long-term survival of the treated tooth.

Severely Decayed or Broken Teeth

When a cavity or fracture is too large to restore with a filling, a crown rebuilds the entire visible portion of the tooth. This is often the difference between saving and losing the tooth entirely.

Missing One or More Teeth

A fixed bridge replaces one to three consecutive missing teeth using the adjacent natural teeth as anchor points. It’s a non-surgical alternative to implants and can often be completed in two appointments.

Severely Worn or Misshapen Teeth

Chronic grinding, acid erosion, or developmental irregularities can leave teeth severely worn. Crowns rebuild the proper tooth height and shape, restoring bite function and improving appearance simultaneously.
What To Expect

Your crown or bridge treatment, step by step.

1

Assessment & Planning

We examine the tooth (or gap) and take X-rays to assess the supporting bone and root health. We discuss the options, explain the procedure, and provide a detailed cost estimate. If a bridge is planned, we assess the anchor teeth carefully to confirm they’re strong enough to support the restoration.

2

Tooth Preparation

The tooth receiving the crown is shaped under local anesthetic to create room for the restoration. For a bridge, the anchor teeth on either side of the gap are prepared in the same way. Precise impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory for fabrication.

3

Temporary Crown

A temporary crown or bridge is placed to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent restoration is being crafted, typically over one to two weeks. You can eat and function normally with your temporary in place, though we advise avoiding sticky or very hard foods.

4

Permanent Placement

At your second appointment, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is tried in for fit, colour, and bite. Any adjustments are made before the restoration is cemented permanently. You’ll leave with a fully functional, natural-looking result.

5

Follow-Up

We recommend a follow-up check at your next routine appointment to confirm the restoration is functioning correctly and that the surrounding gum tissue has adapted well. Crown and bridge restorations are designed to last ten to fifteen years or more with proper care.

What You Gain

Things to Know

Preparation & Aftercare

Before, during, and after your crown or bridge.

Before Your Appointment

No special preparation is needed beyond your usual brushing and flossing. Local anesthetic is used for both preparation appointments, so arrange for someone to drive you if you’re also having sedation. Let us know in advance about any anxiety so we can note it in your file.

With Your Temporary Crown

Temporary crowns are functional but not as strong as permanent ones. Avoid sticky foods like caramel or gum that could dislodge the temporary. Minimize chewing on that side where possible. If the temporary comes off, keep it and call us, we can usually re-cement it the same day.

After Permanent Placement

Your bite may feel slightly different for a day or two as you adjust to the new restoration. Mild sensitivity to temperature is normal and typically fades within two weeks. Clean around the crown or under the bridge pontic daily, plaque accumulation at the margins is the main cause of failure over time. Contact us if your bite feels significantly off.
At-Home Care

Caring for your crown or bridge.

Crowns and bridges require the same daily care as natural teeth, plus a little extra attention at the margins and underneath.
Brush twice daily, paying extra attention to the gumline around the crown
Floss daily, use a floss threader or water flosser to clean under a bridge pontic
Avoid biting into very hard items like ice, hard candy, or crusty bread with the restoration
If you grind your teeth, wear your night guard, grinding is a leading cause of crown fracture
Attend regular cleanings so we can check margins and underlying tooth health
Contact us promptly if the crown feels loose, sharp, or if your bite changes unexpectedly
Why Tomken Dental

Why Mississauga patients trust us for crowns and bridges.

Precision Restorative Work

Crown and bridge outcomes depend on the quality of tooth preparation, impression accuracy, and the fit of the final restoration. Our team takes the time to get every step right, which means better marginal seal, longer restoration life, and a result that looks and feels natural.

Same-Day Alternatives When Possible

For patients who prefer to reduce the number of appointments, we can discuss same-day crown options that use in-office milling technology to fabricate and place a crown in a single visit. Ask about availability at your consultation.

Honest Guidance on Alternatives

We’ll always present implants as an alternative to a bridge when it’s a viable option. The goal is a long-term result you’re happy with, not simply filling the treatment plan with the quickest solution.
Common Questions

Crowns & bridges FAQ.

How long do crowns and bridges last?
With proper care and regular checkups, crowns and bridges typically last ten to fifteen years or more. Longevity depends on the material used, bite forces, home care habits, and whether you grind your teeth. We’ll advise on the best material for your situation at your consultation.
For replacing a single missing tooth, an implant is usually the preferred long-term solution because it doesn’t require altering adjacent healthy teeth and preserves bone. A bridge is a valid alternative when implants aren’t suitable, when budget is a consideration, or when the adjacent teeth already need crowns.
Yes. We take detailed colour measurements and work with a skilled dental lab to match the shade, translucency, and contour of your existing teeth. Most patients find it difficult to identify which tooth was restored.
Traditional crowns and bridges require two appointments, one for preparation and impressions, and one for permanent cementation, typically one to two weeks apart. Same-day crown options reduce this to a single appointment where available.
A tooth that needs a crown but doesn’t receive one is at high risk of fracture, often splitting in a way that makes saving the tooth impossible. Acting promptly when a crown is recommended is almost always the less costly and less disruptive outcome. Call (647) 692-6053 if you have questions.
