Overview

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They restore the ability to eat and speak comfortably, support facial structure, and give you a smile you feel confident showing. Modern dentures are far more natural-looking and comfortable than older designs, and with proper fit and care, they can last many years. At Tomken Dental, our in-house denturist specializes in custom dentures, partial dentures, and implant-supported dentures. Every appliance is crafted to match your facial structure, bite, and aesthetic preferences. We don’t rush the fitting process, getting it right means fewer adjustments and a much better long-term experience.

Restore Function

Missing teeth make chewing and speaking difficult. Well-fitted dentures restore your ability to eat a wider range of foods, speak clearly, and engage confidently in social situations, improving daily quality of life in practical, meaningful ways.

Support Facial Structure

When teeth are lost, the jaw bone gradually shrinks and facial muscles lose support. Dentures help maintain the natural shape of your face, preventing the sunken appearance that can develop over time without tooth replacement.

A Personalized Fit

No two mouths are alike. Our in-house denturist takes precise impressions and measurements to ensure your dentures are fitted specifically to your anatomy, not produced from a generic mould. The result is greater comfort, stability, and a more natural appearance.
Who This Is For

Types of dentures and who they help.

Dentures aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right solution depends on how many teeth are missing, the health of your remaining teeth and gums, and your lifestyle. We’ll assess your situation and recommend the option that best supports your comfort and goals.

Complete Dentures

Designed for patients who have lost all teeth in the upper or lower arch (or both). Conventional complete dentures are placed after the gum tissue has healed, typically eight to twelve weeks after extraction. Immediate dentures can be placed the same day as extractions.

Partial Dentures

If you still have some natural teeth, partial dentures fill the gaps while clasping onto existing teeth for support. They prevent remaining teeth from shifting into the spaces left by missing ones and are a more affordable alternative to implants for multiple missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

For patients who want the security of fixed teeth without the movement of traditional dentures, implant-supported options anchor onto dental implants. They eliminate the need for adhesive, provide superior chewing strength, and help preserve bone over time.

Denture Repairs & Relines

Existing dentures can loosen over time as the jaw changes shape. We offer relines to refit your current appliance to your updated anatomy, and repairs for cracked or broken dentures, often on the same day.
What To Expect

Your denture journey, step by step.

1

Consultation & Assessment

Your first appointment involves a thorough evaluation of your oral health, remaining teeth, gum tissue, and bone levels. We discuss your goals, lifestyle, and budget, and recommend the type of denture best suited to your situation. X-rays may be taken to assess bone health.

2

Impressions & Measurements

Our in-house denturist takes precise impressions of your mouth and records measurements of your bite and jaw relationship. These are sent to a dental laboratory where your custom denture is fabricated, a process that typically takes one to two weeks.

3

Fitting & Adjustments

When your denture is ready, we check the fit, bite, and appearance carefully. Minor adjustments are made at this appointment. It’s normal to need a few follow-up adjustments as your mouth adapts, we include these in your care.

4

Adaptation Period

New dentures take time to feel natural. Speech and chewing may feel different for a few weeks as your muscles adjust. We provide detailed guidance on what to expect and how to speed up the adaptation process comfortably.

5

Ongoing Care & Follow-Up

Annual checkups allow us to assess denture fit as your bone and gum tissue continue to change. We monitor for areas of pressure or irritation and recommend relining or replacement when needed to maintain comfort and function.

What You Gain

Things to Know

Preparation & Aftercare

Before, during, and after your denture fitting.

Before Your Appointment

If you’re having teeth extracted before dentures are placed, allow adequate healing time unless immediate dentures have been planned. Bring a list of current medications to your consultation, certain medications affect healing and saliva production. If you have existing dentures, bring them so we can assess what’s working and what needs to change.

During the Process

Denture fabrication involves multiple appointments over one to two weeks. Each visit is brief and comfortable, impressions, bite recordings, and try-in fittings are non-invasive. We encourage you to ask questions at every step. Your input on appearance, tooth shade, shape, and alignment, is important and valued.

Aftercare

New dentures may feel bulky or loose initially, this is normal as your muscles adapt. Eat soft foods and cut items into smaller pieces during the first few weeks. Remove and rinse dentures after eating, brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleanser, and soak them overnight in water or a denture solution. Never use hot water, which can warp the appliance.

Common Questions

Dentures FAQ.

How long does it take to get dentures?
The process typically takes two to three weeks from the initial impressions to your final fitting, depending on the type of denture and whether any extractions are needed. Immediate dentures can be placed the same day as extractions, though they will require relining once the gums have healed.
Modern dentures are designed to closely mimic natural teeth and gum tissue. We work with you on tooth shade, shape, and alignment to achieve an appearance you’re happy with. Patients are often surprised at how natural well-fitted dentures look and feel.
With proper care, dentures typically last five to eight years before relining or replacement becomes necessary. As your jaw bone changes over time, the fit will gradually loosen, annual checkups allow us to catch this early and recommend relining before discomfort develops.
We recommend removing dentures overnight to allow your gum tissue to rest and recover. Wearing them 24 hours a day can accelerate bone resorption and increase the risk of gum irritation and fungal infection. Soaking overnight also helps maintain the shape of the appliance.
Loose or painful dentures are a sign the fit has changed and should be addressed promptly, not tolerated. Ill-fitting dentures can cause sore spots and accelerate bone loss. Call us at (647) 692-6053 to book a reline assessment.
