Overview

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is urgent dental care for situations that can’t wait for a routine appointment. Whether you’ve broken a tooth, developed a painful abscess, or lost a crown at the worst possible time, an emergency dentist’s job is to relieve your pain, prevent further damage, and stabilize your oral health, often in a single visit. At Tomken Dental, we understand that dental emergencies are stressful and rarely happen at a convenient moment. That’s why we reserve time each day for urgent cases and work hard to see you the same day you call. Our Mississauga clinic is equipped to handle a wide range of emergencies with the tools and experience to treat you promptly and comfortably.

Immediate Relief

Our first goal is to get you out of pain. We use local anesthetic and, when appropriate, sedation to ensure you’re comfortable from the moment we begin. Most patients feel measurably better before they leave the chair.

Damage Prevention

Acting quickly on a dental emergency often means the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Early intervention prevents a cracked tooth from fracturing, an infection from spreading, or a small problem from becoming a costly one.

Stabilize Your Oral Health

After addressing the urgent issue, we create a clear follow-up plan. Emergency care is often the first step in a longer treatment, and we make sure you understand what comes next and why, at your own pace.
Who This Is For

When you may need emergency dental care.

Not sure if your situation counts as an emergency? A good rule of thumb: if you’re in significant pain, your tooth has been damaged, or you notice swelling or bleeding that isn’t stopping, call us. We’d rather talk it through than have you wait on something that needs attention now.

Severe Tooth Pain

Sudden, sharp, or throbbing tooth pain, especially pain that wakes you up or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medication, often signals an infection, deep decay, or a cracked tooth that needs same-day assessment. Don’t wait to see if it passes.

Broken or Knocked-Out Tooth

A chipped tooth may be cosmetic; a broken or completely knocked-out tooth is urgent. If a tooth has been knocked out, keep it moist and call us immediately, reimplantation success drops sharply after the first hour. Time genuinely matters here.

Dental Abscess or Swelling

A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread to your jaw, neck, or beyond if left untreated. Swelling in the face or gums, fever, or a persistent bad taste in your mouth are warning signs. This is one emergency where acting the same day matters most.

Lost Filling, Crown, or Restoration

A missing crown or filling exposes vulnerable tooth structure to bacteria, pressure, and temperature, causing pain and raising the risk of further damage. We can often re-cement or replace a restoration the same day to protect the tooth while a permanent fix is arranged.
What To Expect

Your emergency visit, step by step.

1

Call Ahead

When you call (647) 692-6053, our team will ask a few quick questions about your symptoms to prioritize your care and prepare the right equipment before you arrive. If you’re in severe pain, we’ll guide you through what to do, or not do, in the meantime.

2

Initial Assessment & Comfort

When you arrive, your comfort comes first. We’ll review your symptoms and medical history quickly, then administer local anesthetic to relieve pain before the examination begins. We won’t make you wait through your discomfort to start paperwork.

3

Diagnosis & Imaging

Digital X-rays help us see what’s happening beneath the surface, including infections, fractures, and bone changes that aren’t visible to the naked eye. We’ll explain exactly what we find and what it means in plain language, not dental jargon.

4

Immediate Treatment

Depending on the issue, same-day treatment may include draining an abscess, stabilizing a broken tooth, re-cementing a restoration, performing an extraction, or beginning root canal therapy. We focus on resolving the urgent problem first, then discuss next steps.

5

Follow-Up Plan

Before you leave, we’ll walk you through your aftercare instructions and outline any follow-up treatment that may be needed. If the emergency involved a tooth that requires a longer-term solution, like a crown, implant, or root canal, we’ll schedule that next visit before you go.

Things to Know

Preparation & Aftercare

Before, during, and after your visit.

Before Your Appointment

Call us as soon as you notice the problem, even if you’re unsure whether it’s a true emergency. If you have a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently, and try to keep it in milk or saliva until you arrive. For swelling, a cold compress applied to the outside of your face can help. Avoid using aspirin directly on the gum tissue, as this can cause a burn. Jot down any medications you’re currently taking so we can review them quickly on arrival.

During the Visit

Our team will move at a pace that keeps you informed without overwhelming you. You’ll receive local anesthetic before any examination or treatment begins, and we’ll check in with you throughout to make sure you’re comfortable. If you experience dental anxiety, please let us know when you call, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and can discuss other options to make your visit as stress-free as possible. You’ll never be rushed into a decision; we’ll explain your options and answer your questions before we proceed.

Aftercare

Specific aftercare instructions will depend on the treatment you received, we’ll send you home with written guidance. In general, plan to eat soft foods for the first day or two, avoid the treated area when chewing, and take any prescribed medication as directed. Swelling typically peaks within 24 to 48 hours and can be managed with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers. If pain or swelling worsens after 48 hours or you develop a fever, call us, it’s important that we know.

Common Questions

Emergency dentistry FAQ.

What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes severe or sudden tooth pain, a knocked-out or cracked tooth, dental abscess or facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a lost crown or filling that causes pain. If you are unsure, call us, we would rather assess and reassure you than have you wait on something serious.
Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water but do not scrub it. Try to reinsert it into the socket, or keep it moist in milk or saliva. Call us immediately, reimplantation is most successful within 30 to 60 minutes.
In most cases, waiting makes things worse. An untreated infection can spread quickly, and a cracked tooth can fracture further. Even if pain comes and goes, that can signal an underlying problem. Calling us early often means a simpler, less costly solution, and much faster relief.
Our first priority is to keep you comfortable. We use local anesthetic to numb the area before treatment begins, and we can discuss sedation options if anxiety is a concern. Most patients experience significant relief even before leaving our clinic.
We do our best to accommodate urgent situations on the same day. We recommend calling ahead at (647) 692-6053 so we can prepare for your arrival and minimize your wait time. Our team will guide you on what to do until you reach us.
